The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the God of good luck, happiness and prosperity. This festival starts on the eve of Shukla Chaturthi in Bhadrapada and lasts for 11 days ending on the Ananta Chaturdashi. In some places, this festival is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi. Why is the festival known as Ganesh Chaturthi?

Have you ever wondered what is the reason that this festival is known as Ganesh Chaturthi? Well, it’s because Lord Ganesha was born on the 4th day of the fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada. In Sanskrit 4th directly translated to ‘chatur’ and that is the reason for calling the birthday of Lord Ganesha as Ganesh Chaturthi.

The name Ganesha

There is a reason behind why Lord Ganesha was given that name. It is because he is the chief of the Ganas or attendants of Lord Shiva. In Sanskrit, the name literally translates to ‘head of Ganas’. 

Symbolism 

Lord Ganesha is the symbolism for financial prosperity and good luck in general. The two parts of his body, the head and the body both represent separate trails. The head part represents ’tavas’ which means having great strength and valour while the human part is the representation of ‘tat’ which means wisdom and intelligence.

When lord Shiva beheaded the boy guarding the bathhouse of goddess Parvati,  she threatened Lord Shiva to destroy all creation out of anger. To appease her Lord Shiva attached the head of an elephant to the boy's body and resurrected him. But, Parvati was still angry, so Lord Shiva gave Ganesha a ‘Vardan’ that if anyone worships Lord Ganesha before any other God, they will be blessed with good luck.
