Navratri is a Hindu festival, and it is celebrated for continuous nine days. Navratri is a Sanskrit word, where Nav stands for nine and Ratri stands for nights. The tenth day is celebrated as another Hindu festival - Dussehra.
Navratri festival is celebrated four times in a year namely, Sharad Navratri, Vasant Navratri, Ashadha Navratri and Magha Navratri. But the grand and the important one is Sharad Navratri also known as Maha Navratri. It is celebrated on the first day of bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashvin. It is celebrated in September- October This Navratri even marks the welcoming of the winter season.
Navratri festival is all about worshipping of Hindu goddess Durga and her other nine forms. There are various mythologies behind the celebration of Navratri; the most common one is when Goddess Durga went to visit her mother for nine days, then there she killed a demon- Mahishasur after a fierce battle. The demon was mighty and used to torture and humiliate the innocent people. Goddess Durga got so angry and killed him. These nine days of Navratri are celebrated as the homecoming of Goddess Durga.
Another story behind the celebration of Navratri is about Lord Rama. When the evil king of Lanka- Ravana abducted the wife of Lord Rama, then he took blessings of Goddess Shakti (formed by combining the powers of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh), for the Pooja, he needed 108 lotuses he could arrange only 107; and then he thought of offering his eye which was blue and lotus-like. Goddess was impressed by his offering and granted him strength and blessings, and as a result, he won. When Lord Rama carried out this Pooja, it was spring, and from then only the tradition of worshipping Goddess Durga has continued.
